This year, the Sofia Marathon brings together thousands of participants from around the world for the 42nd time, reaffirming its place as one of the most inspiring sporting events in Bulgaria.
Running 42 kilometers takes determination, consistency, and focus—qualities at the heart of every marathon challenge. In 2025, the upcoming 42nd edition of the Sofia Marathon brings special meaning to that number, as the iconic 42.195 km distance aligns with the race’s own 42-year legacy. With this symbolic milestone, the event continues to inspire thousands of runners from Bulgaria and around the world to take to the streets of the capital and join one of the country’s largest sporting events.
The first edition of the marathon was held on May 22, 1983, organized by the City Council for Physical Education and Sports. The route started in front of the National Assembly, passed along Tsarigradsko Shose, reached the junction near Novi Han, and finished at the Vasil Levski National Stadium.
In the years that followed, the course underwent numerous changes. Between 1988 and 1990, runners completed two 21-kilometer loops. Following political and economic transitions in Bulgaria after 1989, the organization of the marathon was taken over by the Sportna Sofia Foundation, which introduced a new vision for the event. Over time, the course was further adapted to match the city’s infrastructure and meet international standards. Between 2009 and 2011, the marathon distance was temporarily removed due to logistical challenges.
Over the past decade, the Sofia Marathon—now officially known as the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon—has grown steadily. It became part of the AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) calendar and began attracting runners from over 40 countries. It established itself not only as Bulgaria’s national marathon championship but also as a prestigious platform for elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, and across the Balkans. Each year, the route becomes more engaging and the overall experience more rewarding for participants.
In 2024, the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon reached a new milestone, recording over 6,500 participants, including more than 1,000 international runners. For the first time, the route extended into the western part of the city, passing through some of Sofia’s most iconic landmarks. The start and finish line remained at the traditional location—Alexander Battenberg Square—but the race course was updated and officially homologated by World Athletics. The new route featured a single 21-kilometer loop, run once by half-marathoners and twice by marathoners.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the 2024 edition introduced new formats to enhance the event’s atmosphere and community engagement. Eight music stages were set up along the course, creating a festive ambiance for runners and spectators alike. For the first time, there was a competition for the most creative crowd poster, encouraging the public to actively participate and support the athletes in unique ways. The Sofia Marathon began to be seen not only as a sports competition but also as a cultural celebration that unites people of all ages and backgrounds in a shared rhythm and purpose.
Today, the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon is more than a race through the city streets. It is a symbol of personal achievement, collective energy, and the desire to be part of something larger. For some, it’s their first marathon. For others, their tenth. And for many, it’s an unforgettable weekend with family and friends—starting with the sound of the starter pistol and ending with a medal and a smile.
With 41 editions behind it, the marathon not only endures—it evolves, adapts, and continues to inspire. We look forward to what 2025 will bring—for the city, for the runners, and for everyone who will be part of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon.
