Registration for the 42nd Sofia Marathon is now open

Runners from Bulgaria and abroad can now register at the new website www.sofiamarathon.bg for distances of 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, and 42 km.

Registration is now open for the largest mass sports event in Sofia – the Sofia Marathon – on the new website of the event. The race, which will take place on October 11 and 12, will once again start from the traditional location at Alexander Battenberg Square. Participants can sign up for four race distances – 5, 10, 21, and 42 km. The popular 5 km event will be held on October 11, while the longer distances will start the following day, October 12. The first to register will benefit from lower entry fees. The routes that were well received by runners in 2024 remain unchanged for this year’s edition.

From now on, the new platform www.sofiamarathon.bg will be the main source of up-to-date news and important information about the event. In addition to its new address, the site includes several improvements over the previous version. The website, which has been under development for the past few months, offers users a more intuitive registration process, useful information for visitors from Bulgaria and abroad, and valuable training and preparation tips for runners.

“Despite a series of circumstances that delayed the launch of registration this year, we, in partnership with all organizations involved in the Sofia Marathon, have continued to work on preparing the 2025 edition. We have taken into account the detailed feedback from last year’s participants, which numbered over 6,000,” explain the organizers from the “Sport in Leisure Time” Association.

The Sofia Marathon is a long-standing event that continues to evolve. In 2024, several positive developments were introduced – a certified course passing by iconic city landmarks, eight music and performance stages across six districts, creating a festive atmosphere for runners and spectators from over 60 countries. Last year, Sofia Municipality took an active role in the organizational process by providing free public transport passes to participants for the first time – a practice expected to become standard going forward.

Thanks to the enthusiastically received innovations last year, this year’s Sofia Marathon is expected to attract even more interest from participants and spectators. The event has become a key part of Sofia’s cultural and sports calendar, bringing together elite athletes, amateurs, and enthusiasts of all ages.

Over its 42-year history, the race has established itself as one of the leading marathons in the region, attracting athletes from around the world and turning Sofia into a prestigious marathon and tourist destination. In 2024, the event hosted nearly 7,000 participants from over 60 countries. The prize fund exceeds BGN 65,000, with winners in the classic 42 km distance receiving €3,000 each.

For 2025, the leading international athletic organizations, including AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) and World Athletics, have once again confirmed their support for the Sofia Marathon.
