Nearly 1,200 runners took part in the 5 km FIB Mass Run, kicking off the 42nd edition of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 on Sunday (October 12). The start at Alexander I Battenberg Square was given by Sofia City Council members and board members of the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation Ekaterina Yordanova and Hristo Koparanov, the marathon’s Sports Director Militsa Mircheva, and 5kmRun founder Georgi Stanoilov. The winners were Matey Simeonov (17:43 min) and Yulia Vasileva (20:48 min).

This year, the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon once again supports a charity cause. A donation of 4,000 BGN was made to support the training of Radena Angelova, an alpine skier with Down syndrome from FAFA-Bulgaria. The donation was presented by the marathon’s Organizational Director Anatoli Iliev and actor Filip Bukov, ambassador of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon.

A record 8,000+ participants from 66 countries are taking part in this year’s edition of the prestigious event. On Sunday (October 12), Alexander I Battenberg Square hosted the starts of the 10 km, 21 km, and 42 km races.

The course remains unchanged, once again passing through Sofia’s key landmarks, but the refreshment zones feature a new, innovative structure.

Once again, Sofia will move to the rhythm of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 — with music, spirit, and energy all along the route. For the second year in a row, the city turns into a stage with multiple music points keeping the runners’ tempo high, making the marathon a true celebration of sport and movement.
