One of Bulgaria’s most accomplished athletes, Militsa Mircheva, has officially taken on the role of Race Director of Wizz Air Sofia Marathon—the largest marathon event in Bulgaria, which will hold its 42nd edition on October 11–12, 2025.

After years of participating as an elite runner, national record holder, and ambassador of the event, Mircheva now steps into a key leadership role with a clear vision for the marathon’s growth: raising organizational standards, achieving greater international recognition, and attracting even more participants from both Bulgaria and abroad.

Her extensive experience as a track and field athlete, Olympian, and inspiration to thousands of amateur runners makes her a natural choice for this important position.

“The Sofia Marathon was the first marathon I ever ran. I have a special emotional connection to it. For me, it’s more than just a sports event—it’s a personal mission and a chance to contribute with my experience and passion for running. I want Wizz Air Sofia Marathon to be a world-class experience for every participant,” says Mircheva.

The announcement comes at a key moment as preparations for the 42nd edition of the marathon are in full swing. One of the main goals for 2025—set by the Association for Sport in the Free Time, in active cooperation with Sofia Municipality—is to deliver a smooth, well-organized, and positive experience for all participants, with reliable logistics, clear communication, and strong on-course support. This aligns with the direction set in 2024—to establish the event as a true city-wide celebration of sport, reinforcing Sofia’s image as a vibrant destination for athletics, tourism, and outdoor activity.
